Ikoyi Club 1938, Nigeria’s iconic social relaxation club, is gearing up to mark its 85th anniversary with a series of exciting and meaningful events. This historic milestone reflects the club’s enduring legacy of excellence and its commitment to fostering community and social responsibility.
The anniversary celebration officially kicked off with a grand press conference on Monday, September 25, 2023, where the iconic club warmly hosted members of the press to an afternoon of information sharing. It was at this event that the details of the forthcoming celebration were disclosed.
One of the highlights of this celebration is a thought-provoking symposium titled “Managing Change in Ageing Institutions.” The symposium will feature a distinguished speaker, former Lagos State Governor and past Minister of Works & Housing, Babatunde Fashola. This event promises to be an insightful exploration of the challenges and opportunities faced by institutions with rich histories like Ikoyi Club 1938.
Founded in 1938, Ikoyi Club has been a steadfast pillar of the Nigerian social landscape, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas, social bonding, and the development of sports and recreation. Chairman Tafa Zibiri-Aliu emphasized that the club has always maintained high standards, admitting only individuals of impeccable record, pedigree, and social standing as members.
Rufai Ladipo, Vice Chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938 and Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, emphasized the club’s remarkable journey, which has evolved from a strictly European establishment into an inclusive entity that embraces diversity. He noted that while the club has transformed over time, it has retained the British tradition of excellence as its cornerstone, contributing to its triumphant narrative.
Ladipo also highlighted the club’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, including outreach to prisons and orphanage homes, underscoring the organization’s dedication to social interventions and community development.
