It was an evening of splendour and celebration as the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) honoured distinguished advertising professionals, government officials, leading brands, agencies and institutions at the maiden edition of the 2026 ARCON Special Recognition Awards (ASRA), recognising their contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s advertising industry and their commitment to professionalism, ethical practice and regulatory compliance.

Held on Friday, October 23, 2026 at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, under the theme, “An Evening of Many Honours,” the ceremony brought together stakeholders from the advertising, marketing communications, government and corporate sectors to celebrate excellence, innovation and individuals whose contributions have shaped the industry over the years.

Among the prominent personalities recognised were the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake. Other distinguished recipients included Professor Osaren Emokpae, Oluwafunmilayo Onabolu, the late Chief Simeon Olaghere, Dotun Okunbanjo, Ifeayichukwu Moemeke, Sir Chief Olu Falomo, the late Tolulope Ogunkoya, the late Olaniyi Babatunde and Dr Biodun Shobanjo.

Also honoured were Chief Ayodele Owoborode, Senator Akin Odunsi, Sir Steve Omojafor, George Thorpe, Emmanuel Ekunno and Babu Akinbobola, among other industry figures whose professional achievements and contributions have helped advance advertising practice in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of Mohammed Idris, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr Binyerem Ukaire, commended ARCON for organising the awards, describing the Council as a vital institution in safeguarding public trust, promoting ethical standards and supporting Nigeria’s creative economy. He emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between government and the regulator to strengthen regulatory frameworks and encourage responsible communication.

Ukaire stressed that advertising exerts considerable influence on public opinion, consumer behaviour and societal values, insisting that truthfulness, transparency, fairness and accountability must remain the foundation of the profession. He warned that commercial success should never come at the expense of ethical standards and public interest, adding that responsible advertising protects consumers and enhances the credibility of the industry.

In his welcome address, ARCON Director-General, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, said the awards were instituted to celebrate individuals and organisations whose dedication, innovation and professional contributions have made meaningful impacts on the industry. He noted that the recognition was also designed to inspire practitioners to uphold ethical advertising, comply with regulatory requirements and contribute to raising professional standards.

Fadolapo said the lifetime achievement and posthumous award categories were particularly significant because they acknowledged the legacies of pioneers whose work laid the foundations for the industry’s development. According to him, the ceremony provided an opportunity to recognise the people who had helped shape the industry into what it is today while inspiring future generations to sustain that legacy.

The Chairman of the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP), Dr Emmanuel Agu, underscored the importance of regulatory compliance as a strategic business value rather than merely a legal obligation. He explained that adherence to advertising standards promotes consumer confidence, protects brand reputation, encourages fair competition and ensures that commercial communication remains truthful, decent and consistent with societal values. He also urged brands and agencies to demonstrate that creativity and innovation can thrive alongside responsibility and ethical conduct.

Similarly, the Chairman of the ASRA 2026 Organising Committee and Group Managing Director of Omnicom Media Group, West and Central Africa, Yinka Adebayo, said the awards were intended to celebrate professionals who continue to uphold industry standards and contribute to the sector’s growth. The Chairman of the House Committee on Information and National Orientation, Ethics and Values, Hon. Olusola Fatoba, also commended ARCON, stressing that advertising remains an important driver of economic growth, employment, creativity and national development. He called for responsible adoption of digital innovation and artificial intelligence, alongside stronger attention to data privacy and consumer protection.

In the food category, Peak Milk, from Nestlé, and Noah’s Ark were recognised, while Chicken Republic and Wild Fusion Digital Marketing featured in Hotels, Restaurants and Cafés.
