In a bid to reward outstanding performance in Nigeria’s multi-billion-naira advertising sector, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has launched the maiden edition of the ARCON Special Recognition Awards (ASRA), an initiative aimed at redefining regulation, creativity and professional excellence in the industry.
The initiative was unveiled at a high-powered media briefing in Lagos, bringing together some of the country’s foremost marketing leaders, sectoral presidents and corporate executives to witness a new chapter in the regulator’s efforts to shift its role from one focused primarily on enforcement to one that actively promotes industry development.
Speaking at the event, ARCON Director-General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, said in his welcome address that the council was poised to rewrite the history of Nigeria’s marketing communications industry.
“We need to change the narrative as a regulator. We are not regulating to strangulate. We are regulating to develop and grow the industry,” Fadolapo said.
He added that the awards would confer significant prestige on recipients.
“This award is going to be more like a bragging right for the awardees and the recipients because it is going to come with stature, passion and standing,” he said.
Fadolapo explained that the platform would also serve as a means of preserving the rich history of the profession, documenting its evolution from “ground zero” in 1928 to the specialised, unbundled and highly sophisticated divisions that exist today.
Acknowledging that the council had historically placed considerable emphasis on sanctions, he explained that the ASRA platform was conceived out of a desire to motivate and reward ethical compliance and professional excellence.
The awards will culminate in a grand ceremony on Friday, 23 October 2026, at the Bamoral Convention Centre in Ikeja, Lagos. The awards are structured around four key pillars: Advertising Compliance, Public Sector Recognition, Private Sector Recognition and Individual Recognition.
To ensure the highest standards of transparency and eliminate any perception of regulatory bias, the planning committee has partnered with independent audit firm, SIAO Partners.
In his remarks, Mr. Yinka Adebayo, Chairman of the ASRA Planning Committee, presented the awards framework, highlighting that the Advertising Compliance category would cover 16 subsectors, including fintech, banking, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and telecommunications.
He said winners in the compliance category would be determined through an objective, data-backed scoring system, with shortlisted nominees selected based on the volume of advertising materials submitted to ARCON in 2024 and 2025.
“Independent auditors will then calculate a weighted compliance score, rewarding volume and adherence to standards. Both the client brands and their respective creative agencies will be celebrated jointly,” he added.
Lanre Adisa, Chairman of the Heads of Advertising Sectoral Groups, commended the regulator’s collaborative approach and stressed the importance of recognition in promoting the industry.
“We can’t overemphasise the need for recognition in an industry like ours. One of the things that we always strive for is to create visibility for the industry. One good way of doing that is to recognise what we are doing for ourselves and celebrate that, then the world can see what we are doing,” he said.
Representing Tolaram Group, the official Platinum Sponsor of the awards, Mr. Adeola Amosun, Group Media Manager, expressed the company’s pride in supporting an initiative that aligns with its corporate values of integrity and excellence.
“We believe that the growth of the industry is not only driven by great brands and great ideas, but also by professionalism, integrity, excellence and commitment to doing things the right way,” Amosun stated.
Industry professionals, brand custodians and members of the public are encouraged to submit their nominations through the official ASRA portal at www.asrawards.com.
