The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has commended the Federal Government for its continued commitment to sustaining national infrastructure, while drawing urgent attention to the ongoing procurement process for the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos Operational Perimeter Fencing and Security Surveillance Project, as reported in Business Day on July 31, 2025.
MAN emphasised that the project must strictly adhere to Executive Orders 003 and 005, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Nigeria First Policy, by prioritizing indigenous manufacturers in the procurement of fencing materials.
While recognising the competence of foreign manufacturers, MAN reiterated that Nigerian companies possess the proven capacity and technical expertise to produce fencing solutions that meet, and in many cases exceed, international standards.
“This is not a call to influence the award of the contract, but a patriotic appeal to align procurement decisions with national interest for the collective benefit of our economy and the wellbeing of the Nigerian people,” said Segun Ajayi-Kadir, mni, Director General of MAN.
The Association warned that importing fencing materials would undermine government policy and deprive Nigeria of critical socio-economic benefits. Beyond discouraging local industry, it would deny the country the opportunity to create much-needed jobs for Nigerian youth and skilled workers, conserve foreign exchange at a time of economic strain, increase tax revenues through local production, and strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base while enhancing self-reliance in sensitive national security projects.
MAN also recalled that in previous instances, despite its advocacy, airport fencing materials were imported from South Africa, a move that contradicted local content policies and discouraged domestic industry.
The Association stressed that the Lagos Airport fencing project offers a timely opportunity for the present administration to demonstrate its commitment to fully implementing the Nigeria First Policy.
“We strongly believe this administration can correct past errors by ensuring that competent Nigerian manufacturers are engaged for this project. This would signal that the Nigeria First Policy is not only aspirational, but a deliberate and actionable policy of government,” Ajayi-Kadir added.
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Federal Government’s policies that advance inclusive growth, foster industrial development, and ensure that government procurement directly benefits Nigerian businesses and citizens.
